The CLCHPA is based on two assumptions:

  1. Cultural and linguistic competence are developmental processes at both the individual and organizational levels.
  2. With appropriate support, individuals can enhance their knowledge and skills over time.

Achieving cultural and linguistic competence is a developmental process - both individuals and organizations are at various levels of awareness, knowledge, and skills along the cultural competence continuum.

This on-line access to the CLCHPA is designed solely as a self-assessment and educational activity. It may not be used as a measure in research or for evaluation of educational or training interventions.

Upon completion of all the questions in the CLCHPA you will be provided with two types of feedback. First you will receive information in relation to items that comprise three factors based on a sample of 2,504 health care professionals as part of a psychometric analysis completed in 2010 by the Georgetown University National Center for Cultural Competence and Case Western Reserve University, Department of Family Medicine, Research Division. The CLCHPA three factors:

  • Factor 1: Knowledge of culturally and linguistically diverse populations
  • Factor 2: Adapting practice for culturally and linguistically diverse patient populations
  • Factor 3: Promoting the health of culturally and linguistically diverse communities

In addition you will receive feedback on your responses to additional items in the following two areas that have been developed to enhance the assessment process:

  • Linguistic Competence: The capacity of an organization and its personnel to: 1) communicate effectively, and convey information in a manner that is easily understood by diverse groups including persons of limited English proficiency, those who have low literacy skills or are not literate, individuals with disabilities, and those who are deaf or hard of hearing; and 2) respond effectively to the health and mental health literacy needs of populations served.
  • Health and Health Care Disparities: The capacity to recognize and address health and health care disparities that impact diverse patient populations both within practice settings and the community at large.

You will receive a report that provides:

  • Your scores on the three factors and how you compared to the norming sample.
  • Whether your responses reflect awareness, knowledge or skill levels in relation to the two additional areas.
  • A set of professional development and educational resources related to each of the three factors and the domains of Linguistic Competence and Health and Healthcare Disparities that have been customized based on your responses to the CLCHPA.

You will be able to download and save this report.
